KEN WIGHTMAN Sun Media -- Curiosity: If you ever wondered how much bacteria contaminates everyday objects, Hanin Hassan, 12, left, and her sister Halla, 11, have the answer. The two te
sted a door handle, computer mouse, a phone receiver and other commonly handled objects. One thing was made very clear by their work washing hands carefully can be an important step in slowing the spread of disease. The two Al Taqwa Islamic school students had their display at the London District Science and Technology Fair on the weekend at Galleria London.
“We got the idea because we know that people don’t wash their hands and we wanted to prove why hand washing is important,” said Hanin, a Grade 7 pupil at Al-Taqwa Islamic School in London. The sisters placed third in the junior technological division and took home the People’s Choice Award for the entire show.
“The money was the scariest because the Petri dish was full of white fots and a big black one.”
Co-Chairperson Malcolm McLean and Dr. Ted Medzon said they were pleased by the variety and quality of the entries this year.
“It’s important for the kids to do projects because we teach them how research is done,” Medzon said. |
